Hotpoint Stringband: Listen

could you have stumbled upon...

(B.T.)
the oft-alluded to, but never-before-heard Buddy Thomas joke? ok, so here's how Hotpoint got its name. a long long time ago (like 1972?) Mark & Hilarie were at a festival at Carter Caves in KY. Fiddler Buddy Thomas was on stage and we were taping. His banjo player broke a string just as Buddy announced that they were going to play a Scottish song, so Buddy announced to the audience that he was going to tell a Scottish joke. So he did, and this is it. Years later, when asked to come up with a name on the spot for an earlier configuration of the band, this ridiculous joke popped into Hilarie's head and she blurted out, "we're the Hotpoint stringband." So there you have it. Don't spread it around.
